Material Hardship and Mental Health among Older People in a Longitudinal Study

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine trends in material hardship for older people and the association between hardship and mental health of the elderly. The data used for this analysis are from the 3 to 9 waves of the Korea Welfare Panel Study(KoWePS). And we utilized a major analysis methods of Generalized Estimating Equation(GEE) models. The results are as follows. First, 12 to 22 percent of the elderly experience one or more material hardship in food, utility, housing, medical area. Next, mental health of older people who have experienced a material hardship was poor. And mental health of the elderly who have experienced two or more overlapping material hardships was even more poorly. Finally, in the other socio-economic factors in controlled conditions, material hardship had a significantly negative influence on mental health of the elderly. In particular, food insecurity had a negative influence on mental health than other areas of material hardship. And increase in the number of material hardships were worse the mental health of old people. Based on the analysis results, we have proposed plans for improving anti-poverty policies and mental health for the elderly.
